Uganda is a land of breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cultures, and resilient communities. As the Executive Director of Agri Planet Africa, my journey to this beautiful country in August 2023 was not just an expedition but a heartfelt connection to the people and places that define our mission. This trip showcased the resilience of Ugandan farmers and the hope that fuels sustainable agricultural development.

Reflecting on that time now, in January 2025, I am struck by the profound impact the experience had on me and my daughter. Agri Planet Africa, a Ugandan-based NGO, is led by an incredible team of Ugandans who live and work in Uganda. Their dedication and expertise are the backbone of the organization, and this journey offered me the privilege to witness their work firsthand.

A Transformative Arrival

Our adventure began with unexpected detours—flight cancellations and alternate routes through Washington D.C., Rwanda, and eventually to Entebbe. These unforeseen challenges reminded us of life’s unpredictability and the importance of embracing the journey, not just the destination. Arriving late at night, the vibrant spirit of Uganda welcomed us, dispelling initial apprehensions as dawn revealed a stunning landscape.

From the bustling Kyangwali Refugee Settlement to the serene maize fields in Kasungwa, every moment deepened our understanding of Uganda’s cultural richness and agricultural potential. Conversations with local leaders, shared meals with missionaries, and the playful curiosity of children—these interactions underscored the importance of community in fostering resilience.

Planting Seeds of Hope

A key highlight was the grand opening of Agri Planet Africa’s second Community Permaculture Resource Center in Kobusinge. This milestone embodies our commitment to sustainable farming and environmental stewardship. Surrounded by a team of around 70 enthusiastic volunteers, we planted 110 trees and numerous sweet potato crops, each symbolizing growth, nourishment, and hope for a brighter future.

The center also represents a community effort. Volunteers from Love Africa—Mae, Hana, and Tirzah—inspired us with their dedication, and their contributions were honored by naming cottages after them. My daughter Lena’s name graced the educational facility, a nod to her unwavering support, while the conference center was humbly named after me. These gestures reflected the deep connections we formed and the shared mission driving our efforts.

Nature’s Majesty and Cultural Connections

Exploring Uganda’s natural beauty was an awe-inspiring experience. Our safari at Murchison Falls National Park revealed the grandeur of the Nile and the unparalleled power of the world’s strongest waterfall. Floating past hippos and crocodiles, we marveled at nature’s raw splendor, while cultural evenings at the Nkundwa Nile View Lodge immersed us in Uganda’s traditional music and dance.

These cultural celebrations highlighted the importance of preserving traditions while promoting sustainable community growth. Every performance, every shared laugh, and every heartfelt conversation brought us closer to understanding the soul of Uganda.

A Vision for the Future

Our journey reaffirmed Agri Planet Africa’s commitment to empowering communities through sustainable agriculture. From planting trees to engaging in discussions about farming challenges, every step deepened our resolve to support Ugandan farmers. The resilience we witnessed—in the faces of farmers, refugees, and local leaders—strengthened our belief in the transformative power of agriculture.

The Uganda Buddhist Center in Entebbe provided a moment of tranquility and introspection, reminding us of the spiritual underpinnings that guide our mission. Here, amidst serene gardens, we found peace and clarity, envisioning the next steps for Agri Planet Africa.

Farewell, but Not Goodbye

As we bid farewell to Uganda, the memories of this journey remained etched in our hearts. It was more than a trip; it was a testament to the strength of communities and the hope that unites us in building a sustainable future. From the laughter of children to the dedication of farmers, every moment reinforced our mission to create lasting change.

Agri Planet Africa’s work in Uganda is far from over. This journey was a chapter in an ongoing story of resilience, hope, and growth. Together with our partners, volunteers, and the resilient communities we serve, we look forward to continuing this transformative journey.

Reflecting on this trip more than a year later, I am inspired by the progress we have made and the potential that lies ahead. The people of Uganda and the dedicated team of Agri Planet Africa remind me daily that hope and resilience are the seeds of a brighter future.
